Making your first moves in Tic-Tac-Toe

Bring your attention to one round of Tic-Tac-Toe. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Look at what changes after your first action.

Bring this focus to a round

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Start with a deliberate move.

Start here and follow along

  1. Player 1 places a cross in an empty cell.
  2. Player 2 places a circle in another empty cell.
  3. Take turns, watching both your winning opportunities and the opponent’s threats.
  4. The board stops accepting moves when a player wins or the game is drawn.

How to interact with the game

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

An example before you play

Two crosses in the top row threaten a win in the remaining top-row cell. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

A useful caution

You cannot replace a mark that is already on the board. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
